When ordinary drilling gives way to hard RCC, anchor bolts, deep holes and breaking out concrete, a rotary hammer is the tool for the job. But buyers quickly hit a fork in the road: SDS plus vs SDS max. The two systems look similar and share a name, yet they are built for very different scales of work, and their bits do not swap between machines.

First, what SDS actually means

SDS is the slot-in shank system that rotary hammers use instead of a normal keyed chuck. The bit drops into the tool and locks in place, yet is free to move back and forth slightly, which lets the hammer mechanism drive real impact energy straight into the bit. No chuck to tighten, no bit slipping, and far more force transferred than a standard drill could manage.

There are two main sizes, SDS-plus and SDS-max, and the difference comes down to the shank diameter and how much power sits behind it.

SDS-plus: the everyday rotary hammer

SDS-plus is the workhorse size, and the one most trades reach for. It uses a 10 mm shank and sits in the light-to-medium hammer class, typically around 2 to 3 kg.

What it handles

SDS-plus tools deliver roughly 2 to 5 joules of impact energy and drill holes up to about 30 mm in concrete, with the sweet spot around 8 to 16 mm. That covers the vast majority of fixing, anchoring and installation work. For example, the Bosch GBH 220 delivers about 2 J, the popular GBH 2-26 around 2.7 J, and the GBH 4-32 DFR steps up to about 4.2 J for heavier SDS-plus work.

SDS-max: the heavy hitter

SDS-max is a different class of tool, built for sustained heavy drilling and demolition. It uses a larger 18 mm shank and a much more powerful mechanism.

What it handles

SDS-max hammers deliver far more impact energy, commonly around 8 joules and up, and drill larger holes (roughly 12 to 40 mm and beyond) along with big core work. The Bosch GBH 5-40 D, for instance, is an entry point into the SDS-max class with about 8.5 J of impact energy from an 1,100 W motor. This is the tool for work that would overwhelm an SDS-plus machine.

  • Large-diameter and deep holes in reinforced concrete
  • Heavy structural fixing and anchoring
  • Breaking out, channelling and demolition with chisels
  • Sustained, all-day masonry work on bigger jobs

The trade-off is weight and cost: an SDS-max hammer is heavier and a bigger investment, so it only makes sense if your work genuinely demands it.

The most important line in that table is the last one: the two shank sizes are not interchangeable. An SDS-plus bit will not fit an SDS-max tool, and the reverse is true too.

Which one do you need?

Occasional or home use

If you only drill the odd hole in a wall, you may not need a rotary hammer at all; a good impact drill will cope. If you want more, an SDS-plus hammer is the natural step up.

General contractor, electrician or plumber

SDS-plus is almost always the right answer. It covers anchoring, fixing and installation across concrete and brick, stays light in the hand all day, and is the more affordable choice.

Heavy structural, demolition or large-core work

This is where SDS-max earns its place. If you regularly drill large or deep holes in reinforced concrete, or break out material, the extra impact energy saves real time and effort. Many outfits keep an SDS-plus for daily work and an SDS-max for the heavy jobs.

A note on bits and chisels

Because the shanks differ, so do the bits. SDS-plus drill bits, core cutters and chisels fit only SDS-plus tools, and SDS-max accessories fit only SDS-max tools. Buy the accessories that match your machine, and keep them clean and lightly greased on the shank so they seat and slide properly.   • Match the tool to your biggest regular hole size, not the occasional one-off.
  • For most trades, SDS-plus is the sensible everyday choice; reserve SDS-max for genuinely heavy work.
  • Weight matters on all-day jobs; do not buy more hammer than you will carry comfortably.
  • Look for a chisel mode if you also need to break out or channel.
  • Buy bits and chisels to suit your shank system; the two do not mix.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use SDS-plus bits in an SDS-max machine?

No. The shank sizes are different (10 mm for SDS-plus, 18 mm for SDS-max), so bits are not interchangeable between the two systems. Adaptors exist but are best avoided for serious work, as they reduce performance and reliability.

Is SDS-max always better than SDS-plus?

Not for most people. SDS-max is more powerful, but it is also heavier and a bigger investment. For fixing and general construction, SDS-plus is lighter, cheaper and more than capable. SDS-max only makes sense for heavy drilling and demolition.

What size holes can an SDS-plus hammer drill?

Typically up to around 30 mm in concrete, with the best efficiency in the 8 to 16 mm range. For larger or deeper holes on a regular basis, step up to SDS-max.

Do I need a rotary hammer, or will an impact drill do?

For occasional light masonry, an impact drill with a masonry bit is enough. For frequent concrete drilling, anchor work or hard RCC, a rotary hammer is faster and far less tiring.

Can a rotary hammer also chisel?

Many can, if they have a chisel or rotation-stop mode. SDS-max tools in particular are well suited to breaking out and channelling with the right chisel fitted.
