Three tools, three very similar names, and a lot of confusion at the counter. Every week someone at Khandelwal Trading Co. in Panchkula asks for an “impact drill” when they actually need an impact driver, or reaches for a percussion drill on a job that really wants a rotary hammer. The names sound alike, but these are three different machines built for three different jobs.

Get the choice wrong and you either overpay for power you never use, or fight a tool that was never designed for the work. This guide clears up the three main types of drill machines in plain terms: what each one does, what it is best at, where it struggles, and which you should actually buy. Why the names confuse everyone

The trouble is the word “impact.” An impact drill and an impact driver both use an impact action, but the impact does completely different things in each. In a drill it hammers the bit forward to break into masonry. In a driver it twists the bit harder to drive a stubborn screw. A rotary hammer, meanwhile, is the heavy cousin that most people picture when they think of serious concrete drilling.

The impact drill (percussion drill)

This is the everyday all-rounder and the machine most homes and small contractors own. You may also hear it called a percussion drill or hammer drill.

How it works

Alongside normal spinning, an impact drill adds a rapid tapping action. Two ridged plates inside ratchet against each other as the chuck turns, pushing the bit forward in thousands of tiny hammer blows per minute. The blows are light but very fast, which is enough to work a masonry bit into brick, block and light concrete. A switch turns the hammer action on or off, so the same tool drills wood and metal in plain rotary mode.

Where it struggles

The rotary hammer (SDS)

When a wall gets too hard for a percussion drill, this is the tool that takes over. It is built for masonry, and it does that one thing extremely well.

How it works

Instead of two plates tapping together, a rotary hammer uses a piston mechanism to drive the bit forward with genuine force, measured in Joules of impact energy rather than blows per minute. Each strike is far heavier than a percussion drill’s, so the bit chews through hard concrete and stone with much less push from you. It uses a slot-in SDS bit system (SDS-plus for most work, SDS-max for the heaviest) instead of a normal keyed chuck.

Best for

  • Hard RCC, reinforced concrete and stone
  • Anchor bolts and repeated deep holes
  • Fixing frames, railings, gates and heavy brackets
  • Light chiselling and breaking out, on models with a chisel mode

Where it struggles

The impact driver

This is the one people most often confuse with an impact drill, and it is the most different of the three. An impact driver is a fastening tool, not really a hole-making one.

How it works

An impact driver takes 1/4 inch hex-shank bits in a quick-change collet, not a chuck. When it meets resistance, a hammer-and-anvil mechanism delivers rapid rotational bursts of torque, so it keeps driving long screws and bolts when a normal drill would simply stall or twist your wrist. Compact 12V models such as the Bosch GDR 12V-105 (around 105 Nm) suit most fastening, while 18V units like the Bosch GDR 180-LI (up to 160 Nm) or DeWalt’s DCF drivers handle heavier work.

Best for

  • Driving long wood screws, decking screws and lag bolts fast
  • Assembling furniture, framing and repetitive fastening
  • Working in tight spaces, thanks to a very short body
  • Anyone who drives a lot of screws and is tired of stripped heads

Where it struggles

It cannot take normal round drill bits (only hex-shank accessories), it has no clutch for fine torque control, and it is not made for masonry. Most people pair an impact driver with a drill rather than replacing one.

An impact drill plus a cordless impact driver is the classic pairing. The drill makes holes, the driver handles the screws, and together they cover the vast majority of home projects. If you also assemble a lot of furniture, the driver quickly earns its place.

The contractor or trade user

If you drill into concrete daily, add a rotary hammer to the mix. A common trade kit is a rotary hammer for masonry, an impact drill for general work, and an impact driver for fast fastening. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying an impact driver expecting to drill holes: it drives fasteners, it does not take normal drill bits.
  • Using a percussion drill for heavy concrete all day: it works for the odd hole, but a rotary hammer is faster and far kinder on the tool and on you.

Frequently asked questions

Is an impact drill the same as an impact driver?

No. An impact drill (percussion drill) hammers the bit forward to drill into masonry and takes normal drill bits in a chuck. An impact driver twists the bit with bursts of torque to drive screws and bolts, and takes only 1/4 inch hex bits. They look similar but do different jobs.

Can a rotary hammer replace an impact drill?

For masonry, yes, and it will be far more capable. But a rotary hammer is heavy and specialised, so most people keep a lighter impact drill for everyday wood, metal and general work.

Do I really need all three?

Not usually. A homeowner is fine with one impact drill. A keen DIYer benefits from a drill plus an impact driver. Only regular masonry work justifies adding a rotary hammer.

Can an impact driver drill holes at all?

Only with special hex-shank drill bits, and even then it is not ideal. If hole-making is the main task, use a drill.

Which is best for drilling concrete at home?

For occasional light concrete, an impact drill with a masonry bit is enough. For hard RCC or deep holes, a rotary hammer is the right tool.
