The three families of angle grinder discs

Almost every disc you will ever fit belongs to one of three families. Get these right and the rest is detail.

  • Cutting wheels (thin, flat): for slicing through metal, rod, pipe and section. Thin and rigid, meant for the edge only.
  • Grinding wheels (thick, depressed centre): for removing material, dressing welds, deburring and knocking off sharp edges. Used on the face, at an angle.
  • Flap discs (layered abrasive flaps): for blending, finishing and smoothing. Cooler and more forgiving than a grinding wheel.

Cutting wheels: for slicing metal cleanly

A cutting wheel (also called a cut-off wheel) is thin, usually 1 mm to 3 mm, and bonded so it stays flat and rigid. Its only job is to cut straight through material along the edge of the disc.

Best for

  • Mild steel rod, angle, flat, pipe and channel
  • Rebar and binding rod on site
  • Bolts, nuts and fasteners that have seized
  • Sheet metal and light sections

The one rule that matters

Never grind with the side of a cutting wheel. It is thin for a reason. Side pressure flexes it, and a flexed cut-off wheel can crack and burst at speed. If you need to grind, change to a grinding wheel. This single mistake causes most disc failures we hear about.

Stainless steel needs its own wheel

For stainless, use an “inox” cutting wheel that is free of iron, sulphur and chlorine. A normal steel wheel leaves contamination that rusts the stainless later. It is a small detail that fabricators care about.

Grinding wheels: for removing material and dressing welds

A grinding wheel is much thicker, typically around 6 mm, and has a depressed (dished) centre so you can work at a comfortable angle. It removes metal fast using its flat face.

  • Deburring cut edges and removing burrs
  • Knocking off sharp corners and cleaning castings
  • Heavy stock removal on steel

How to use it well

Hold the grinder so the disc meets the work at roughly 15 to 30 degrees. Let the wheel do the work, do not lean on it. Too steep an angle gouges; too flat and you glaze the surface. A grinding wheel is aggressive, so it is not the tool for a fine finish. That is where the flap disc comes in.

Flap discs: for blending and a smooth finish

A flap disc is made of overlapping strips of coated abrasive layered around the disc. As the top layer wears, fresh abrasive is exposed, so it cuts consistently and stays cool. It sits between a grinding wheel and sandpaper in aggressiveness.

Best for

  • Blending welds smooth after grinding
  • Surface finishing and paint or rust removal on steel
  • Chamfering and edge work where you want control
  • Prepping metal before painting or coating

Reading the grit

Flap discs are sold by grit number. Lower numbers cut faster and rougher; higher numbers finish finer.

  • Grit 40 to 60: heavy stock removal, fast blending
  • Grit 80: the all-round choice for most weld and finishing work
  • Grit 120: fine finishing before paint or polish

Specialist discs worth knowing

Diamond blades (stone, tile, concrete, masonry)

Diamond blades cut by abrasion, not by teeth, which is why they handle marble, granite, tile, concrete and brick where an abrasive wheel would fail. They come in segmented, turbo and continuous rim styles for different materials and finishes. Wire brushes and cup wheels

Wire wheels and twist-knot cup brushes strip rust, scale, old paint and weld slag without removing base metal. Handy for restoration and prep work.

Masonry abrasive wheels

Silicon carbide masonry cut-off wheels can cut brick, block and stone, but for anything harder or where a clean edge matters, a diamond blade is the better and safer choice.

  • Cut mild steel, rod, pipe: thin cutting wheel (aluminium oxide)
  • Cut stainless steel: inox cutting wheel (contaminant-free)
  • Grind welds and steel: depressed-centre grinding wheel
  • Blend and finish metal: flap disc (grit 60 to 120)
  • Cut marble, granite, tile: diamond blade (turbo or continuous rim)
  • Cut concrete, brick, block: segmented diamond blade or masonry wheel
  • Remove rust, paint, scale: wire brush or cup wheel

How to read a disc before you fit it

Every genuine disc carries printed information. Two numbers matter most for safety.

  • Diameter and bore: the disc must match your grinder size and guard. The standard bore (arbor) is 22.23 mm; Bosch X-LOCK machines use a click-fit mount instead, so buy the matching disc.
  • Maximum RPM: the disc’s rated speed must be higher than your grinder’s no-load speed. A small 4-inch grinder spins near 11,000 RPM, so never fit an old large-diameter disc rated for lower speed.

Also check the expiry: bonded abrasive wheels have a shelf life (usually printed as a date). Old, damp or cracked wheels should be thrown away, not used.

Common disc mistakes we see

  • Grinding with a cutting wheel: the number-one cause of burst discs. Use the right family.
  • Removing the guard: the guard is what stands between you and a shattered wheel. Keep it on.
  • Wrong disc for stainless: a standard steel wheel contaminates stainless and causes rust spots.
  • Using a chipped or expired wheel: a hairline crack becomes a burst at 11,000 RPM.
  • Forcing the tool: if it is not cutting, the disc is wrong or worn, not too slow. Let the disc do the work.

Can I use a cutting wheel for grinding?

No. Cutting wheels are thin and built for edge cutting only. Grinding with the side flexes and can burst them. Use a proper grinding wheel or flap disc instead.
