You drill a hole, push in a plug, drive the screw, and the whole thing spins loose or pulls straight back out. It is one of the most common fixing failures, and it almost never means you bought a bad plug. It means the plug was wrong for that wall.
The single biggest skill in fixing things to a wall is reading what the wall is made of, then matching the plug or anchor to it. Step one: know your wall
Before you pick a plug, work out what you are drilling into. A few quick checks tell you almost everything.
- Concrete (RCC): very hard, the drill bites slowly and needs hammer action, and the dust is fine and grey. This is the strongest base for a fixing.
- Solid brick: firm, reddish dust, drills steadily. A reliable base for most household loads.
- AAC or fly-ash block (Siporex type): lightweight, the drill sinks in fast and easily, the dust is pale and powdery. Solid-feeling but soft, so it needs the right plug.
- Hollow brick or block: the drill suddenly breaks through into a gap. The plug must grip across a cavity, not just expand.
- Plasterboard or gypsum partition: thin, the drill goes through with almost no resistance and there is a hollow space behind. Never treat this like a solid wall.
If you are unsure, drill a small test hole in an out-of-the-way spot and watch the dust and the feel of the bit. Getting this one step right prevents most fixing failures.
How a wall plug actually works
A screw on its own cannot hold in masonry because the material will not let a thread bite cleanly. The plug solves this. As the screw goes in, it forces the plug to press hard against the sides of the hole. In solid materials the plug expands and grips by friction. In hollow or soft materials a good plug folds or knots up behind the material so it cannot pull back through. The screw grips the plug, the plug grips the wall.
That is why the same plug behaves differently in different walls, and why matching the plug type to the material matters so much.
The right wall plug for concrete and solid brick
For everyday light and medium jobs in concrete and solid masonry, a nylon expansion plug is the go-to. Choosing the correct wall plug for concrete is mostly about picking a quality plug and the matching screw, then drilling the hole to the right size.

Fixing into AAC blocks and hollow materials
AAC and fly-ash blocks feel solid but are soft and full of air. A plain expansion plug can crush the material or simply spin, so it never grips properly. Fixing into plasterboard and gypsum partitions
Plasterboard is thin, with a hollow space behind it, so a solid-wall plug is the wrong tool. Push a normal expansion plug into a gypsum board and it will pull out with almost any weight. Use fixings made for cavities instead:
- Plasterboard plugs that spread or clamp against the back of the board for light loads such as small frames and fittings.
- Spring toggles and cavity fixings that open out behind the board for heavier items like a shelf or a light cabinet.
For anything genuinely heavy on a partition wall, such as a large TV, the correct approach is to find the metal stud or timber batten behind the board and fix into that. A wall scanner makes that easy, and drilling blind into a partition is how people hit hidden wiring or pipes.
Frame fixings for windows, doors and battens
When there is a gap behind what you are fixing, such as a window frame, a door frame or a batten held off the wall, a frame fixing does the job in one operation. It passes through the frame and into the wall together, so you fix and anchor in a single step without pre-positioning a separate plug. Heavy loads: through-bolts, wedge anchors and chemical anchors

Through-bolts and wedge anchors

Chemical (resin) anchors
For the very highest loads, for fixings close to the edge of a slab, or for anchoring rebar and threaded rod, a chemical anchor is the strongest option. How to fit a wall plug correctly, step by step
Even the right plug fails if it is fitted badly. Follow these steps for a fixing that holds.
- Match the drill bit to the plug size. An 8 mm plug needs an 8 mm masonry bit, and so on. A hole that is too big is the number one reason plugs spin.
- Use hammer mode in concrete and brick. A masonry bit with the drill set to hammer action cuts a clean hole. Turn hammer off for soft AAC block so you do not oversize the hole.
- Drill deep enough. The hole should be a little deeper than the plug so it seats fully and the screw tip is not bottoming out.
- Clean the hole. Blow or brush out the dust. Loose dust badly weakens the grip, and it is essential before a chemical anchor.
- Seat the plug flush with the wall surface, then drive the correct screw. Use the screw size the plug is made for.
- Do not over-tighten. Snug is enough. Forcing the screw can strip the plug or crack the wall face.

- Using a solid-wall plug in plasterboard. It will pull out. Use a cavity fixing instead.
- Drilling the hole too big. The plug spins and never grips. Match the bit to the plug.
- Ignoring soft AAC block. A plain expansion plug crushes the material. Use a universal or aerated-concrete plug.
- Using a plastic plug for a heavy or safety fixing. Handrails and heavy brackets need a steel or chemical anchor.
- Leaving dust in the hole. It weakens every fixing and ruins a chemical anchor.
