The primary job of binding wire is tying rebar. In any RCC element, a slab, beam, column or footing, the reinforcement bars are laid out in a grid and every intersection is tied with binding wire. This holds the cage rigid and correctly spaced while the shuttering is set and the concrete is poured, so the steel ends up exactly where the design intends. The wire is not there to add strength to the finished concrete, it is there to keep the steel from shifting during the pour.
2. Bundling and handling
Binding wire is the go-to for bundling rods, pipes, conduit and offcuts for storage or lifting, and for tagging and grouping materials on a busy site.

- Pass it under the crossing. Take the wire diagonally under the point where two bars cross, bringing both ends up around the intersection.
- Bring the ends together over the top of the crossing so the wire wraps the joint.
- Twist to tighten. Grip the two ends and twist, by hand with pliers or with a tie-wire twister, until the tie is snug and the bars are held firm.
- Trim the tails. Cut off the excess so no sharp ends stick up into the concrete cover.
Speed comes with rhythm. Steel-fixers doing this all day use a twister tool or a hook to work fast without tiring their hands. The aim is a tie that holds the bars in position, not one so tight it kinks or snaps the wire.
