This is the family people get wrong most often. A screw alone will not hold in concrete, brick or block, because there is nothing soft for the thread to bite. The plug or anchor is what grips the wall, and the screw or bolt then grips the plug. The right choice depends almost entirely on what the wall is made of and how much weight it must carry.

For everyday loads in solid walls

For light to medium jobs in concrete and solid masonry, the humble nylon plug is your workhorse. A screw cuts its own grip into wood, board, thin metal or a wall plug. Three things separate a good screw choice from a poor one: the material it is going into, the head and drive, and the coating.

The main screw types we stock

Nuts, bolts and washers: grades, threads and clamping strength

When you need real, adjustable strength through a pre-drilled hole, you move to bolts. A bolt clamps two parts together, a nut holds the other end, and washers spread the load and stop things working loose. This is the family where grade and thread actually matter.

Bolts for different jobs

  • Hex bolts: the general-purpose bolt for structures, fittings and machinery.

Grade and material

Rivets, blind fixings and site essentials

The last family covers two very different needs: joining thin material where you can only reach one side, and the everyday fixing that keeps a construction site moving.

Rivets and blind fixings

Blind rivets, often called pop rivets, join sheet metal, ACP cladding and panels permanently from one side, no nut needed behind. You drill a hole, load the rivet in a riveter, and squeeze until the mandrel snaps and the rivet clamps tight. For threaded fixings in thin sheet, rivet nuts (rivnuts) create a strong thread where the metal is too thin to tap. Binding wire and site fixing

On any RCC job, GI binding wire is what ties the reinforcement steel together so the cage holds shape while concrete is poured. The terms overlap in daily use. Broadly, a wall plug is a plastic sleeve that grips the wall so a screw can hold, used for light and medium loads. An anchor usually means a stronger steel fixing, such as a through-bolt or chemical anchor, for heavy or safety-critical loads. Match the choice to the weight it must carry.

Which fixing should I use in an AAC (Siporex) block wall?
