Angle grinders are sold by disc size, and the size you pick changes everything: how deep it cuts, how much it weighs, how much power it draws, and how safe it is to handle. In Panchkula and across the Tricity, the 4-inch (100 mm) grinder is by far the most common, but it is not always the right one. Buy too small and you fight the tool on heavy work; buy too big and it is clumsy, tiring and harder to control.

What the disc size actually decides

Before comparing sizes, understand what changes as the disc gets bigger.

  • Cut depth: a bigger disc reaches deeper into the material. This is the main reason to go up a size.
  • Power: larger grinders carry bigger motors to swing the bigger disc.
  • Weight and control: more size means more weight and more torque, which is harder to hold and more prone to kickback.
  • Speed: smaller discs spin faster (a 4-inch runs near 11,000 RPM), larger discs spin slower to keep the rim speed safe.

So the real question is not “which is best” but “which is right for the deepest, heaviest cut I do regularly.”

100 mm (4-inch): the everyday all-rounder

The 4-inch grinder is the default choice for most homes and workshops in the Tricity, and for good reason. It is light, easy to control one-handed for short bursts (two hands is still safest), and cheap to run with widely available discs.

  • Cutting rod, pipe, angle and light section
  • Deburring, weld dressing and general grinding
  • Tile and small stone jobs with the right disc
  • DIY, electrical, plumbing and maintenance work

Limits

On thick section, deep concrete or big stone, a 4-inch simply cannot reach deep enough, and pushing it just wears the tool. That is your cue to size up.

125 mm (5-inch): more depth, more power, still handy

The 5-inch is the step up the trade often reaches for. You gain useful cut depth and a stronger motor, while the machine stays manageable for one person over a full day.

Best for

  • Heavier fabrication and thicker steel section
  • Longer cutting and grinding sessions where the extra power reduces strain
  • Fabricators who want one machine to cover most jobs

Trade-off

Discs and the machine cost a little more than a 4-inch, and it is slightly heavier. For many trade users, the added depth and power are worth it.

180 mm (7-inch): heavy-duty cutting and grinding

The 7-inch is a two-handed, heavy-duty machine for serious material removal and deep cuts. This is a professional tool, not a first grinder.

Best for

  • Thick steel, heavy section and structural work
  • Deep cuts in stone, concrete and masonry with a diamond blade
  • Large fabrication and demolition tasks

Handle with respect

230 mm (9-inch): the specialist big cutter

The 9-inch is the largest common handheld grinder. Machines like the Bosch GWS 2200-230 (2200 W, 9-inch) give the deepest handheld cut, around 68 mm, and the most grinding power. They are used for large-section steel, deep concrete cutting and heavy stone work.

They are also the heaviest and most demanding to control, with the strongest kickback. Only experienced operators should run a 9-inch, always two-handed, with a guard and full protection.

Which size should you buy?

  • Home, DIY, light maintenance: a 4-inch (100 mm) is all most people need. Light, affordable, and easy to find discs for.
  • Fabrication and regular trade use: a 5-inch (125 mm) gives depth and power without becoming a two-handed monster. A strong all-round choice.
  • Heavy structural, deep stone or concrete: a 7-inch (180 mm) for the deep, tough cuts.
  • Specialist deep cutting only: a 9-inch (230 mm), for trained hands.

A practical setup for many workshops is two machines: a 4-inch for the bulk of light work and a 7-inch for when depth is needed. It saves wearing out one tool on the wrong job.

A note on wattage and quality

Bigger is not only about the disc. Two 4-inch grinders can be worlds apart: a 670 W hobby machine and a 900 W professional one feel completely different under load. Match the disc to the machine

Frequently asked questions

Is a 4-inch angle grinder enough for home use?

For most homeowners, yes. A 4-inch handles cutting rod and pipe, grinding, deburring and small tile jobs. Only step up if you regularly cut thick steel, stone or concrete.

What is the difference between 100 mm and 125 mm grinders?

The 125 mm cuts deeper (around 34 mm versus 25 mm) and usually has a stronger motor, so it suits heavier fabrication. The 100 mm is lighter, cheaper and easier for everyday work.

Why do bigger angle grinders spin slower?

To keep the rim speed within safe limits. A larger disc covers more distance per turn, so the RPM is lower. A 4-inch runs near 11,000 RPM while a 7-inch or 9-inch runs much slower.

Are big angle grinders more dangerous?

They carry more energy and stronger kickback, so they demand more skill, a firm two-handed grip, a proper guard and full PPE. They are not a good first grinder.

Can I put a 4-inch disc on a 5-inch grinder?

It is not advised. The guard and mounting are sized for the machine’s rated disc. Always use the disc size the grinder and guard are built for.
