Structural epoxy bonding and strengthening: high-strength joints

When a joint has to carry real structural load, epoxy takes over from cementitious systems. Sikadur-31 is a two-part, high-strength, thixotropic epoxy adhesive used to bond concrete to concrete, steel, and other materials, to anchor bars and bolts, and to seal cracks. Because it is thixotropic, it holds on vertical and overhead surfaces and hardens without shrinkage into a very strong, chemical-resistant joint. Sikadur-32 is formulated specifically for bonding fresh concrete to hardened concrete. A typical concrete repair sequence

  • Diagnose: identify the actual cause. A crack from corroding steel needs the steel treated first, or it will simply crack again.
  • Prepare the surface: cut out loose and weak concrete back to a sound base, expose and clean corroded steel, and remove dust, oil, and laitance. Preparation decides the strength of the bond.
  • Protect and prime: coat exposed steel with an anti-corrosion primer such as SikaTop Armatec-110 EpoCem, then apply the bonding coat, SBR slurry for cementitious repairs or epoxy where a structural bond is required.
  • Reinstate: place the repair mortar, micro-concrete, or grout while the bond coat is still receptive, and compact it properly.
