Some of the most common joining jobs share one awkward problem: you can only reach one side. A metal duct, an ACP cladding panel, a nameplate, a thin steel enclosure, there is simply no way to hold a nut behind it while you tighten a bolt from the front. This is exactly what rivets are made for.

A blind rivet, often called a pop rivet, forms a permanent, vibration-resistant joint in sheet metal and panels from one side only. Once you understand how they work and how to fit them, riveting is fast, clean and genuinely satisfying. This guide explains how to use rivets step by step, the tools you need, how to pick the right rivet, and where blind fixings beat screws and bolts.

What a blind rivet is and how it works

A blind rivet has two parts: a hollow body with a flanged head, and a thin steel pin (the mandrel) running through it. You slide the body into a drilled hole so the flange sits against the front face and the rest passes through to the blind, or hidden, side. A riveting tool then grips the mandrel and pulls hard. As it pulls, the mandrel head squashes the far end of the body outward into a second head behind the material, clamping the two sheets together. At a set tension the mandrel snaps off flush, leaving a neat, permanent joint.

The result is a fixing that holds well against pull-out and vibration, will not work loose like a screw can, and needs access to only one side. The trade-off is that it is permanent: to remove a rivet you drill it out.

The tools: hand, pneumatic and nut-rivet guns

Choosing the right rivet

Two measurements decide the rivet: diameter and grip range.

  • Diameter: the thickness of the rivet body, which sets the size of hole you drill and how much load the joint carries. Bigger diameter means a stronger joint.
  • Grip range: the combined thickness of the materials the rivet can clamp. Every rivet has a minimum and maximum grip. Too short and it will not set behind the material, too long and it will not clamp tight. Match the grip range to your total sheet thickness.

Material matters too. Aluminium-body rivets are light and easy to set for general sheet and panel work. Steel and stainless rivets give more strength and better corrosion resistance for structural, outdoor and monsoon-exposed jobs here in the Tricity. How to use a rivet, step by step

Riveting is quick once you have the method. Here is the full process with a hand riveter.

  • Clamp and align the sheets. Hold the two pieces exactly where they need to sit. Any movement after drilling throws the holes out.
  • Drill the hole to match the rivet. Use a bit that matches the rivet diameter so the body is a snug fit, not loose. Drill through both sheets together where possible.
  • Deburr the hole. Clear the sharp rim so the sheets sit flat and the rivet flange seats cleanly.
  • Load the rivet into the tool. Fit the correct nosepiece for the rivet size, then push the mandrel fully into the riveter.
  • Insert and hold firm. Push the rivet body all the way into the hole so the flange is flat against the surface, and keep the tool square to the work.
  • Squeeze until it snaps. Work the handle. You will feel the rivet pull up tight, then the mandrel snaps off with a pop. On a hand tool this may take two or three squeezes.
  • Check the joint. The set rivet should be tight with the flange flush. Discard the broken-off mandrel pin safely.

A quick tip: match the drill bit and nosepiece to the rivet size before you start a run, and drill one test hole in scrap to confirm the fit.

Rivet nuts (rivnuts): a strong thread in thin sheet

Thin sheet metal is too shallow to cut a reliable thread into, yet you often need one, for example to bolt a removable panel, a bracket or a handle onto sheet steel. A rivet nut, or rivnut, solves this. It sets like a rivet from one side, but leaves behind a threaded insert. You can then run a bolt into it again and again, and remove and refit the part as needed.

Rivets vs screws and bolts: when to use which

Blind fixings are not always the answer. A quick comparison helps you choose.

  • Use a rivet when the joint is permanent, you can reach only one side, and you want something that will not vibrate loose, as with ACP cladding, ducting, enclosures and panels.

  • Use a rivnut when you need a reusable thread in sheet too thin to tap.

Common riveting mistakes to avoid

  • Wrong grip length. A rivet too short will not set, too long will not clamp. Match the grip range to your total material thickness.
  • Oversized hole. A loose hole gives a weak, wobbly joint. The body should be a snug fit.
  • Tool not square. Holding the riveter at an angle sets the rivet crooked and weak. Keep it perpendicular.
  • Sheets not clamped. If the parts shift after drilling, the holes misalign and the rivet pulls the joint out of line.
  • Mixing metals in wet settings. An aluminium rivet in steel outdoors can corrode over time. Match materials where you can.
