There is a particular kind of heartbreak in stone work: a beautiful new marble floor that turns yellow, cloudy or patchy within a few months of laying. The owner blames the stone, the supplier blames the mason, and the mason blames the water. In reality, the cause is almost always the same, and it is preventable. The problem starts underneath, before the stone even goes down.

This guide explains stone protection before installation: why laid stone yellows and blooms, which stones are most at risk, and how AKEMI anti-stain back-coating and face impregnation stop the problem before it starts. Why stone stains and yellows after laying

Stone is laid on a wet cement mortar bed, and that bed stays damp for a long time. As the moisture slowly rises up through the slab, it does not travel alone. It carries dissolved salts and alkali from the cement straight into the underside of the stone. The results show up on the finished surface as:

  • Blooming and efflorescence: a whitish, hazy film as salts crystallise at the surface.
  • Yellowing: the classic discolouration on white and light marble.
  • Dark damp patches that come and go with the weather.
  • Rust stains from iron content in the stone or the mortar reacting with moisture.
  • Spalling in severe cases, where the surface flakes as trapped salts expand.

On top of this, wet cement slurry can penetrate the back and sides of the slab during laying, staining from behind. Because all of this comes from underneath and from within, you cannot reliably fix it by cleaning the top later. It has to be prevented before the stone is laid.

Which stone needs pre-laying protection most

Every natural stone benefits, but some are far more vulnerable than others:

  • White and light marble, where even slight yellowing is glaringly obvious.
  • Translucent stone and onyx, which show discolouration through their depth.
  • Green and other water-sensitive marbles, which can warp and stain badly with moisture.
  • Large-format slabs, where a single stained panel is expensive to replace.
  • Facades and external cladding, permanently exposed to weather and moisture.
  • Anything laid on a new or damp slab, which is most jobs.

Granite is more forgiving thanks to its density, but large-format granite and granite facades still gain from proper pre-laying protection.

The two parts of pre-laying protection

Complete protection treats the stone on both faces: the hidden back and edges, and the exposed surface.

Seal the back and edges: Anti-Stain Coating 2015

AKEMI Anti-Stain Coating 2015 is a two-component coating made specifically for the rear and side sealing of stone slabs. It is highly stable against alkali, which is exactly what it faces from the laying mortar, and it forms a barrier that blocks rising moisture, salts and alkali from reaching the stone. This is what prevents the blooming, yellowing and rust before they can start.

The clever part: fresh quartz sand is broadcast onto the wet coating. Once cured, that sand gives the mortar a mechanical key to grip, so sealing the back does not stop the stone bonding to the bed. You get the moisture barrier and a sound fix.

Protect the exposed face: impregnation

The visible surface is best pre-treated with a penetrating impregnator such as AKEMI Stain Repellent Nano-Effect. Applied before or soon after laying, it helps the face shrug off cement slurry during installation and repels oil and water stains in service. It is breathable, non-yellowing and food-safe. On more absorbent stone, an AKEMI Protector pre-laying treatment adds moisture repellency across all faces during the vulnerable installation period.

How to protect stone before laying, step by step

  • Start with clean, completely dry stone. Any moisture already trapped inside the slab will cause the very problems you are trying to prevent. Dry stone is non-negotiable.
  • Seal the back and edges. Mix Anti-Stain Coating 2015 to the correct ratio and apply a thin, even layer across the entire back and all edges. Miss a spot and moisture finds it.
  • Broadcast quartz sand. While the coating is still wet, scatter quartz sand over it so the mortar has something to bond to later.
  • Let it cure fully before handling or laying, so the barrier is properly formed.
  • Impregnate the face. Treat the exposed surface with Stain Repellent Nano-Effect, then wipe off any excess before it dries so there is no haze.
  • Lay the stone as normal, onto a properly prepared and waterproofed bed.
  • Top up after grouting. A final face impregnation once the job is finished locks in the surface protection.

Always test your products and method on a sample piece first, especially with light or unusual stone.

Do not forget the substrate

Back-coating protects the stone, but the root cause is a damp base. The two go together. If the slab or wall behind the stone is not properly waterproofed, you are fighting a losing battle against moisture. Sort out the substrate at the same time. Prevention is far cheaper than the cure

This is the point worth making to every client. Once blooming and yellowing have set in, there is often no easy fix. Remedial work can mean lifting and relaying stone, at huge cost and disruption, and the result is rarely as good as new. The pre-laying protection that would have prevented it costs a fraction of that, and takes a fraction of the time. For any premium stone job, back-coating and face impregnation are not an optional extra, they are cheap insurance on an expensive material.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my new marble floor turning yellow?

Almost always because of rising moisture from the mortar bed carrying salts and alkali into the stone. Without back-coating and face protection before laying, this is very common on white and light marble.

Will sealing the back stop the stone bonding to the mortar?

No. Quartz sand is broadcast onto the wet Anti-Stain Coating 2015, and once cured it gives the mortar a surface to grip. You get the moisture barrier without losing the bond.

Does granite need pre-laying protection too?

Granite is denser and more forgiving, so the risk is lower. But large-format granite, granite facades and any granite on a damp base still benefit from the same approach.

Can yellowing and blooming be fixed after the stone is laid?

Sometimes surface blooming can be reduced, but discolouration driven by moisture from below is very hard to cure and may need the stone lifted and relaid. Prevention before laying is far more reliable.

Is back-coating a substitute for waterproofing the slab?

No. They work together. Back-coating protects the stone; waterproofing keeps moisture out of the substrate. For a lasting result you want both.
