What a wall scanner detects
A multi detector senses changes behind a wall surface and tells you where an object is and, roughly, how deep. The Bosch GMS 120 has three detection modes:

- Live wire mode: traces energised electrical cables so you can avoid or follow them.

How to scan a wall before drilling, step by step
- Pick the right mode for the wall. Use metal mode on masonry and concrete to find pipes and rebar, drywall mode on partition board to find studs, and check live wire mode near any electrical points.
- Place the detector flat against the wall on a clear patch and let it calibrate. Keep your hand steady and do not lift it during calibration.
- Move slowly and evenly across the area. The indicator changes colour and the display shows when you are over an object.
- Mark the edges, then the centre. Slide in from both sides to find where the object starts and stops, then use the centre finder and marking hole to mark the middle.
- Scan a second time at right angles. A cable or pipe can run in any direction, so cross scan the same patch vertically and horizontally.
- Choose a clear drill point away from every marked object, and drill with caution even so.
Where scanning saves you most
- Kitchens and bathrooms: dense with water pipes and cables behind the tiles.
- Fixing heavy items: cabinets, geysers, TV mounts and shelves, where you drill deep into unknown territory.
- Renovation and repair work: older walls where nobody has a record of what runs where.

- Depth is limited. A deep service beyond the detector’s range may not show, so combine scanning with common sense about where services usually run.
