Chalk lines snap crooked, water levels are slow, and a spirit level only checks one short span at a time. How a self levelling line laser works

Inside a Bosch GLL is a pendulum on a magnetic damping system. When you switch the tool on within its self levelling range (usually a few degrees off level), the pendulum settles and the projected line is automatically true. Tip the tool too far and it warns you, typically with a blinking line or a beep, so you never build off a line that is not level. Switch some models off and the pendulum locks for safe transport.

You can also lock most models into manual mode to project a deliberately sloped line, useful for ramps, drainage falls and staircases.

Cross line, three line, red or green: choosing the right GLL

  • Cross line lasers (for example the GLL 30): project one level horizontal and one plumb vertical line that cross. Ideal for cabinets, dados, switchboards, mirrors and general level and plumb work.

Using a line laser for wall and floor tiling

  1. Set the laser on a small tripod or clamp its bracket to a stable point, roughly at your first tile course height.
  2. Let it self level, then align the horizontal line to your starting course. Work up from a true line rather than the floor, which is rarely level.
  3. Use the vertical line to keep your columns plumb, so the grout joints stay straight the whole way up.
  4. For floors, use the crossing lines to set out your centre point and your two main axes, then lay outward so cut tiles land at the edges.

Because the line runs the full wall, every tile references the same datum, and you avoid the drift that creeps in when you measure tile by tile.

Using a line laser for false ceilings and partitions

  1. Mark your finished ceiling height at one point.
  2. Set the laser so its horizontal line sits at that height and let it self level.
  3. The level line now wraps the room, giving you a continuous reference to fix your perimeter channel or angle to, with no sagging string line.
  4. Use the vertical line to drop plumb points for suspension rods and to keep partition frames straight.

This is where a three line laser earns its price: the two vertical lines let you square off corners quickly for grid ceilings and drywall partitions.

Using a line laser for electrical and fit out layout

  • Switch and socket rows: set the horizontal line at socket height and mark every box on one true line.
  • Conduit and trunking runs: follow the level or plumb line so runs stay straight and professional.
  • Light fittings and fans: use the crossing point to centre fixtures and space downlights evenly.

  • Stand the laser on a firm, stable base. Any wobble moves the line.
  • In bright rooms, choose a green beam model or fit the laser target card and glasses that improve line visibility.
  • Check the tool occasionally against a known level reference, especially after a knock.
  • Keep the pendulum locked when carrying the tool between rooms if your model has a lock.
